Zhougang Fm

Period:
Neoproterozoic

Age Interval:
Earliest Nanhuan (latest Tonian), Nh (60)

Province:
Anhui

Type Locality and Naming

Central-east Anhui. The Zhougang Fm was named by Xu Jiawei (1965), which is quoted in the Guidebook of 1: 200000 Scale Geological Map of Nanjing Sheet, Anhui Bureau of Geology (1977). The type section is located at Zhougang village, Quanjiao County, Anhui Province. The reference section is located at Shijia, Chuzhou, Anhui Province.

Synonym: (周岗组)

Lithology and Thickness

The Zhougang Fm consists of a series of low-grade metamorphosed shelf facies sandy shale. There is a layer of pebbly and lithic feldspathic quartz sandstone at the bottom. Lower part of the formation consists of yellow-green, gray-yellow sandy phyllite (sandy slate) interbedded with phyllitic fine-grained feldspathic sandstone, metamorphosed sandstone and silty phyllite. Upper part consists of green silty phyllite, phyllite and phyllitic feldspathic quartz sandstone. The Zhougang Formation is 1256 m thick.

Lithology Pattern:
Sandy claystone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It is unconformable onto the underlying Zhangbaling Fm (Mesoproterozoic)

Upper contact

Disconformably overlain by the Sujiawan Fm glacial till

Regional extent

Central to central-west Anhui. The formation is mainly developed from the north of Chaohu City to Chuzhou, Anhui Province.
